In 1928 the grand opening of the elegant movie palace, the California theater, located a block from the well traveled Route 66, is restored and is a popular nostalgic spot. Live entrainment, an original Wurlitzer pipe organ, and other interesting elements, bring a large number of theatre goers to the special location.
Many cultures and decades past have gone into the making of San Bernardino. A city which has known rousing days, San Bernardino’s history when Spanish missionaries were the first settlers to the region. The fertile valley appealed to them with it’s location at the foot of a majestic mountain range. It served as an outpost for missionaries who traveled throughout the California territory preaching to the various Indian tribes.
In 1774, Father Garces had accompanied the De Anza expedition in crossing the Colorado River near Yuma. He made his way through the mountains south of Mt. San Jacinto, and proceeded onto the old site of the San Gabriel Mission.
William F. Holcomb discovered San Bernardino’s gold during the 1860s, the railroad came in the 1880s, in 1936 the Stater Brothers Market chain was founded, and the area has continued to grow into the metropolis that it is today.
The uniqueness of the Arrowhead, the vast wilderness mountain ranges, reflect a pioneer sprit of the San Bernardino Valley, where yet new territories are there to discover as travelers seek out their own trail to blaze.
